I'm not getting alerts in my pocket.

Alerts in the background need a trip running (tap Start walk or Start ride), location access set to Always (Settings → Hey → Location), and notifications allowed. Hey also stays quiet about anything it already told you about in the last 12 hours.

Why does Hey want “Always” location access?

So it can keep watching while the phone is locked during a trip you started. Outside a trip, Hey doesn’t track you in the background.

Does it drain the battery?

Walking, Hey checks your position in bursts, more often as something gets close and much less when you stand still. Riding uses continuous location and costs more. Trips end by themselves after an hour without moving (you can change that in Settings).

Something on the map is wrong or missing.

Places come from Google Maps and sightings from iNaturalist. Corrections made there show up in Hey after its next search.

How do I change how close something has to be?

Settings → Walk or Ride. You can set both how far Hey looks and how close something must be to alert.
